X12 999 Acknowledgment Decoder

Decodes AK1/AK9 group status, IK5 transaction status, IK3 segment errors and IK4 element errors; verifies counts.

Clinical safety notice: Zero real patient data (PHI/PII) may be entered into this browser utility. Use synthetic test payloads only. Local-first deterministic processing; nothing leaves your browser.

How it works

AK1 names the acknowledged group (functional ID, control number, version). Each AK2 opens a transaction-set response containing optional IK3 (segment error: segment ID, position, loop, error code), IK4 (element error: position, reference number, error code, bad value) and a closing IK5 (status and up to five error codes). AK9 gives the group status, sets included, received and accepted, and group-level error codes. Each code is decoded from the bundled tables. Checks: AK9 included and received equal the number of AK2 loops; AK9 accepted equals the number of sets with IK5 status A or E; a group status of A needs every set accepted. The 4010 997 forms (AK3, AK4, AK5) are read the same way.
Data source and version: ASC X12 999 implementation guide 005010X231A1 code lists (functional group status, transaction set status, segment syntax errors 1 to 8, element syntax errors 1 to 12, transaction set errors 1 to 7 and 23, group errors 1 to 6), subset curated by this tool v1.0 (2026-10-25). Codes outside the subset are reported as not bundled, not as invalid; check the current implementation guide.
